BOY IN SUN HAT - Rovinj, Croatia (July 10, 2017) This photograph won 2nd place at a regional art show in 2025. It captures a moment on a tour boat in Croatia with a big extended Polish family on a hot summer's day in 2017. The picture is of an angelic boy flanked on each side by his enormous father and uncle. The juror in the DAA art show said that it just made him smile. Half of the passengers on the boat had to be taken back to shore due to seasickness and losing their lunches, but the rest of us then had a party centered around these two giant brothers drinking beer and dancing to music. The young boy was particularly entranced by my 14-year-old daughter. "It is love" said his amused father.
TIDAL EXPOSURE - Scarborough, ME (10-19-2025) - On a foggy night in 1897, a schooner called the Middleton slammed into rocks off Higgins Beach in Scarborough, ME and catastrophically tore open her hull. For over a century, the massive timber ribs of the ship have been inundated and uncovered every day. Only visible at low tide, the shipwreck’s appearance is never exactly the same as the surrounding sands constantly shift and change.
THE POWER OF MUSIC - Waterbury, Vermont (August 10, 2024) 1st place award for photography - Danvers Art Association Peabody Institute Library regional art show #15 - Juror feedback: "This fantastic photograph offers us a candid and spontaneous feel of the moment. It isa delightful snapshot of everyday life, capturing a connection between street performers and their young audience; a snapshot frozen in time. The photo captures a moment of engagement and curiosity, showing the simple joy and wonder that music can inspire, even in young children. It evokes a sense of nostalgia and appreciation for spontaneous moments of connection. The photo is taken from a slightly higher angle, allowing viewers to see both the musicians and the child in one frame. The angle helps emphasize the child's small stature compared to the adults, highlighting the innocence and curiosity of youth. The child serves as a natural focal point to their placement in the center and their engagement with the musicians. This creates a narrative, drawing the viewer's attention to the interaction and emotional connection. SCIENCE BABY -- West Newbury, MA (December 28, 2025) -- This is a young Highland Cattle calf named Kevin who lives down the road from me. Friendly and gentle, he is quietly looking down through his long lashes, and the December sun is shining beautifully on his lustrous hair. He comes across as polite, modest, low-key, unpretentious. He is also munching on a discarded Christmas tree. (Kevin is also basically a "test tube baby" -- he was born from an unrelated dairy cow mother in whom his embryo had been implanted.)
ROUGH HOLDS THE SMOOTH - West Newbury, MA (April 26, 2026) - An ocean-polished white stone and a smooth piece of cast-up coral are embedded in the thick, deeply furrowed bark of an old black locust tree.
OAK CREEK CANYON CONTRAILS -- Slide Rock State Park, Arizona (January 12, 2026) -- This was the embodiment of a fleeting moment: the ephemeral contrails from three passing planes created a brief geometric grid that fit exactly around the undulating landscape of the ancient red rock in Oak Creek Canyon.
A SEAWEED HAIR DAY - Scarborough, ME (August 17, 2025) - A grandfather and grandson share a seaweed moment on a beautiful summer's day at the beach. The grandfather has been bald and proud for many decades, and his wife did not recognize him for several moments when he emerged from the waves with his seaweed hair. She then laughed until her stomach hurt.
MONA LISA IN MAPLE LEAVES - Newburyport, Massachusetts (October, 2010) - An old photograph recently found and scanned and made new in monochrome. The girl's expression is ambiguous, somewhere on the boundary between serenity and melancholy.
WINTER TANNERY LIGHTS -- Newburyport, Massachusetts (January 28, 2025) -- The strings of decorative lights at the Tannery Marketplace in Newburyport trace graceful arcs through the night sky, and are infinitely reflected in the parked cars. They brighten the darkness, and pull us toward one another.

ONCE A TALL TREE - Newburyport, Massachusetts (April 20, 2026) - A massive piece of driftwood lies on the northern tip of Plum Island, cast up by the relentless sea and sculpted by wind, sand, water, and fire. It rears its head high above the beach.
FLYING OR FALLING -- Boston, Massachusetts (March 9, 2015) -- Is this a person flying...or falling? In a great vaulted room at the Museum of Fine Arts in Boston, Joseph Borofsky's mannequins were suspended in midair in an exhibit called I Dreamed I Could Fly.
BIRDS AT DAY'S END -- New York City, New York (January 27, 2024) -- Birds perch on the stainless steel tubes of David Hammons’ monumental sculpture “Day’s End” in the skies above the Hudson River in New York City.
PREPARING FOR PRIDE PARADE - Newburyport, MA (5/31/2025) - A young woman wearing a unicorn helmet and a striped rainbow outfit ties the laces of her roller skates before the start of the annual 2025 Pride Day celebration parade in Newburyport, MA.

FRAGMENTED - New York City, New York (March 9, 2025) A sun-kissed, bare-chested figure looms larger than life against an urban landscape. His head touches the sky, but a tree shows surreally through the middle of his fragmented body. The sculpture is one of the “Travelers” by Bruno Catalano.

SUMMER SOLSTICE WHOOPIE PIE EATING CONTEST - Rockland, Maine (June 21, 2026) - For over two decades, the Rockland Cafe has hosted an oversized-whoopie-pie eating contest, part of an annual street party celebrating the first official day of summer. There is a lot of hilarity as the participants try to stuff their faces as fast as possible.
STRIPED BY THE SUN - Newburyport, Massachusetts (May 5, 2026) - A couple relaxes on the swinging benches at Newburyport's central waterfront on an unseasonably warm spring day. This ordinary moment is amplified by the striping of sunlight on their clothing and bodies. Their little dog does not want to rest and is having his own separate moment down below.
