A SEAWEED HAIR DAY - Scarborough, Maine (August 17, 2025) - A grandfather and grandson share a seaweed moment on a beautiful summer's day at the beach. The grandfather has been bald and proud for many decades, and his wife did not recognize him for several moments when he emerged from the waves with his seaweed hair. She then laughed until her stomach hurt.
MOMENT OF CONNECTION - Newburyport, Massachusetts (July 28, 2025) - A young man tenderly embraces a huge Great Dane named Malarkey, who he is meeting for the first time. His eyes are closed as he savors the moment of connection. A woman beams at them in the background. Malarkey is a striking gentle giant at 188 pounds.
FLYING OR FALLING - Boston, Massachusetts (March 9, 2015) - I created this picture recently from an older photo I took a decade ago. In a great vaulted room at the Museum of Fine Arts in Boston, Joseph Borofsky's mannequins were suspended in midair in an exhibit called I Dreamed I Could Fly. I was particularly attracted to the shadows, the curving lines, and the bands of dark vs. light. Whether this is a person flying or falling...it depends on the viewer.
PANDEMIC HALO - Provincetown, Massachusetts (September 26, 2020) - During the height of the Covid pandemic in 2020, a masked woman and a muscular dog named Julie are haloed by the setting sun on the Provincetown Causeway. Her wiry corona of hair evokes the rays of the sun. It looks like a beautiful evening...but, looking closer, there is also something unsettling about the black mask covering half her face, the heavy clouds overhead and the alert dog held on leash. Are they welcoming the viewer, or wary? Should we keep our distance?
