MILLIE WITH HER YOUNG SELF - Paguate, New Mexico (October 3, 2026) - I met 80-year-old Millie Chino at the Veterans Memorial she helped create in the small village of Paguate within the lands of the Laguna Pueblo. She told me about growing up next to the infamous Jackpile Uranium Mine which produced ore for Cold War-era nuclear weapons. The massive open-pit mine opened in 1953 when Millie was a young girl, and was located within a few yards of the village. Millie is holding a photograph of her innocent young self smiling in front of mining equipment with her parents in the background. The mine operated for three decades, providing jobs and wages for hundreds of tribal members. Millie remembers running with the other kids to watch the mine's twice-daily blasting, and the clouds of dust would coat them and the village's crops and vegetable gardens -- that dust was radioactive. Runoff poisoned the local waterways. Closed for decades, it has not been fully cleaned up. Many people in Paguate suffer from disproportionately high rates of cancers, lung diseases, kidney diseases and renal failure. Today, new uranium mines are proposed for the area, and the owners pledge that they "will not leave a mess." Personally, I do not believe them.
MORNING LIGHT - Albuquerque, New Mexico (October 3, 2026) - Built in the 1920s, the towering old Machine Shop for the Albuquerque Rail Yards used to be the city's largest employer. Abandoned decades ago, workers replaced broken panes of glass with inexpensive colored plexiglass, inadvertently creating something like an industrial "cathedral." Morning light streams through the amber and green windows on the other side.
DANCE OF THE GROUND CREW - Albuquerque, New Mexico (October 3, 2026) - This hot air balloon -- one of hundreds launched at the annual Albuquerque Balloon Fiesta -- landed on an empty dirt lot in the middle of the city. The ground crew has to hold on with all their strength to keep the balloon from blowing away as the massive fabric envelope cools and collapses.
INSIDE THE CREVASSE - Jostedal, Norway (July 30, 2026) Guides can take visitors with crampons and ropes deep inside glacier crevasses and caves (after safety assessments). The walls are cobalt blue, smooth and glassy. High overhead is a narrow slice of light blue sky.
RASPBERRY HARVEST ON THE FJORD - Solvorn, Norway (July 30, 2026) Workers are harvesting large and delicious raspberries at a fruit farm and guesthouse called Eplet in the small village of Solvorn, which is located on the steep slopes of a fjord. The ferry is crossing in the background.
BLUE DEPTHS - Jostedal, Norway (July 30, 2026) - The intense blue of the compressed ice beneath a glacier’s snowy surface transitions into inky darkness.
FOLDED GLACIAL ICE - Jostedal, Norway (July 30, 2026) - The immense pressure of a slow moving glacier squeezes and bends the solid ice into fantastical shapes over uneven bedrock. Meltwater tunnels carve their way through the folded ice year-round.
EDGE OF THE GLACIER - Jostedal, Norway (July 30, 2026)
FJORD BOATHOUSES - Solvern, Norway (July 28. 2026)
BERGEN HARBOR FROCK POSING - Bergen, Norway (August 5, 2026) - The long wooden merchant buildings of Bergen’s harbor are a UNESCO World Heritage Site attracting a million visitors each year. Here two of them have found an uncrowded spot for “frock posing,” swirling their vintage dresses.
PORTRAIT OF OLIVIA AND MOLLY - West Newbury, MA (July 12, 2026) - Facing opposite directions, their profiles balanced, a young woman and her dog relax together on a couch with family and friends as the sun pours in through a nearby window.
RADIATING LINES - Brighton, England (July 5, 2024) - A woman stands close to a large bronze sculpture of the globe called "Afloat" by Hamish Black on the Brighton seafront. The lines formed by her knapsack and jacket, cast down on the pedestal, plus the adjacent stone seawall, and the sea and horizon beyond all radiate outwards from the great circle.
