The colors of even the humblest architecture in the district can be strikingly vibrant, and, from certain vantage points, the terracotta rooftops make geometric figures receding into this unique urban landscape.</image:caption>

More durable than contemporary asphalt shingles, they are highly functional and beautiful and graceful. Kawara are usually colored red or gray, but occasionally they are glazed a beautiful cerulean blue. This house is on a narrow street in the small fishing village of Karato Port on Teshima Island in Japan. The street was blocked off from evening traffic for the monthly event, and lots of people were strolling the Lower Dauphin Street historic district corridor, enjoying music, food, pop-up markets, and people-watching. An older man sat in a well-worn chair in the street, surrounded by colorful balloons and wearing a balloon artist shirt, taking requests and making the typical assortment of squeaky swords, hats, and creatures for appreciative kids. It captures a moment on a tour boat in Croatia with a big extended Polish family on a hot summer's day in 2017. The picture is of a angelic boy flanked on each side by his enormous father and uncle. The juror in the DAA art show said that it just made him smile. Half of the passengers on the boat had to be taken back to shore due to seasickness and losing their lunches, but the rest of us then had a party centered around these two giant brothers drinking beer and dancing to music. The young boy was particularly entranced by my 14-year-old daughter. "It is love" said his amused father.</image:caption>

<image:caption>SMALL - LOOKING AT TALL - Waterbury, Vermont (August 10, 2024) 1st place award for photography - Danvers Art Association Peabody Institute Library regional art show #15 - Juror feedback: "This fantastic photograph offers us a candid and spontaneous feel of the moment. It isa delightful snapshot of everyday life, capturing a connection between street performers and their young audience; a snapshot frozen in time. The photo captures a moment of engagement and curiosity, showing the simple joy and wonder that music can inspire, even in young children. It evokes a sense of nostalgia and appreciation for spontaneous moments of connection. The photo is taken from a slightly higher angle, allowing viewers to see both the musicians and the child in one frame. The angle helps emphasize the child's small stature compared to the adults, highlighting the innocence and curiosity of youth. The child serves as a natural focal point to their placement in the center and their engagement with the musicians. This creates a narrative, drawing the viewer's attention to the interaction and emotional connection. The image is reminiscent of Garry Winogrand who was a prominent black-and-white street scene photographer known for his candid portrayals of American life. -- Abby Battis, 5/10/25</image:caption>

The woman's wiry corona of hair evokes the rays of the sun. <image:caption>TIDAL EXPOSURE 3 - Scarborough, ME (11/28/2025) - This is a close-up view of part of a massive old ship's timber soaked in saltwater for over a century and temporarily revealed as the tide goes out. It was the keel of the vessel - the backbone of the ship - and it still has large iron spikes protruding from it. This section of wood now has remarkable blue and purple colors, and more this day than I had seen on previous visits. It always seems to be changing. The colors seem to be caused by a chemical reaction between the wood, the slowly oxidizing iron spikes, and the saltwater. In close-up, the swirling grain of the old wood suggests a microcosm of churning currents and whirlpools of water, and the encrusted barnacles look like small islands in a turbulent sea.</image:caption>

The musicians are gone, but their microphones and instruments remain, grouped around the figures in the surreal backdrop. There are many layers here. The mural is salvaged street art, old trailer doors painted in 2011 by the international artistic duo Herakut in Portsmouth, NH. The figures in the mural are inspired by a poem called "Milking," written in 1872 by Celia Thaxter. The artist Hera is galvanized by fables and fairytales, stories filled with animal metaphors and exploring the human condition. The adaptations keep unfolding. Art builds on art.</image:caption>
